Hollywood, California and the state of Michigan. These two
locations may not seem to have much in common, but you might be
surprised if you take a closer look. As they say in real estate,
it is all about location, location, location. And that is where
southern California and Michigan have many similarities.
Southern California was chosen by filmmakers in the early 1900s
for its ocean beaches, mountains, deserts, forests, and a quick
escape route into Mexico if you got into trouble with the New
York theater barons (not kidding). Michigan has Great Lake
beaches (which are salt-free!), the Porcupine mountains, dunes,
broad-leaf & needle-leaf forests, and a quick escape route into
Canada if you get into trouble (okay, I'm just kidding about that
one)!

Michigan and southern California are amazingly similar in the
fact that they both have very distinct ecosystems in fairly close
proximity to each other. Not many states can offer the same wide
array of scenic landscapes that we (including media makers) seek
out and enjoy. One could even argue that Michigan has more
diversity than southern California, when you consider the
distinct differences between northern Michigan and southern
Michigan.

You're probably thinking, "what about the fact that
Hollywood has wonderful weather for filming all year
long?" It's a good point, but consider that we've
got 'em beat on the diversity angle yet again. Can
Hollywood top our glorious autumn colors or our serene winter
landscapes? Not even close.

The Great Lakes State is a wonderful place to film, with a wide
spectrum of nature's palettes to choose from. Our beautiful
landscapes and venues have set scenes in the past, as with
Mackinac Island in "Somewhere in Time"; in the
present, as in "8 Mile"; and even in the future, with "The
Island". There is hope that this trend will continue, as
Michigan is recognized as a star destination for film production
and locations.
